Established in 2008, IHMRI is a joint initiative of the University of Wollongong and the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. Reflecting this partnership, IHMRI provides an independent medical research environment to bring academics and clinicians together to solve broadly relevant health problems.
Importantly, IHMRI’s research extends across the research translation continuum and seeks to ensure research, and research findings, can be improved clinical practice, health services and public health strategies.
As a broad-based medical research institute, IHMRI’s academic and clinician researchers span many disciplines and seek to:
- discover mechanisms and pathways underlying clinical conditions, especially age-related diseases, chronic conditions and mental illness, all particularly prevalent in the Illawarra region and the developed world;
- improve the range and effectiveness of clinical treatments, including lifestyle interventions, new drugs and delivery methods, and innovative medical devices; and
- develop and test new models of health care and population-health based interventions.
